kiserutsuRosemary Bandini is delighted to be exhibiting at the International Netsuke Society’s biennial convention, this year being held in Baltimore. To comply with current regulations in the USA, this catalogue is largely a celebration of wood netsuke, as well as fine lacquer inrō and presents a timely opportunity to re-evaluate the subtle qualities of wood carving.I am also especially happy to offer a fine group of inrō from a single owner collection.Asian Art in London 2015 does not present the same restrictions on ivory, the European focus being that of combatting the trade in raw ivory, a goal fully supported by the International Netsuke Society.

Japanese Netsuke from the Collection of Teddy Hahn

teddy_hahn To anyone lucky enough to have known him, the name of Teddy Hahn brings an immediate feeling of warmth and pleasure. Remembered by many for his colourful appearance, he favoured eclectic combinations in his dress: chunky gold rings which he had forged himself, lapel pins, brooches, scarves and – always – brightly coloured odd socks.
He gave the feeling that he had chosen these things particularly for that day and he carried it all with a natural elegance and ease. Read the foreword to the Catalogue

Sumo Netsuke & Okimono

sumo_catalogue

I’m delighted to post an online catalogue of sumo-themed netsuke and okimono, almost all from the collection of Karl-Ludwig Kley.

Many appeared in the book of his collection, Tiny Titans, published in 2006.

He mentions in his preface to this book that “sumo taught me a lot about the Japanese – their history, their culture, the social and religious structure of their society, the rites and objets d’art of their great civilisation.” Sumo presents a microcosm of the world of feudal Japan.

This is has been prepared in conjunction with Max Rutherston Ltd.

The economist’s netsuke

The economist’s netsuke, by Rosemary Bandini  It is unusual for a netsuke to turn up depicting a story which seems almost unknown, so when I came across this finely carved scene signed Masanao (of Ise Yamada), I was intrigued. In fact it was quite easy to discover the subject, as the netsuke is recorded...

Japanese netsuke, inro and lacquerware, October 2013

1The establishment of my new company, Rosemary Bandini Ltd., has left little time to catch my breath, but then the excitement of seeking out and finding netsuke, several of which are on the market for the first time in many years, always manages to fuel the sprit. 2013 has been a busy year in the London netsuke world, starting with the loan exhibition of netsuke, In a Nutshell, at the Embassy of Japan that opened in April, and the biennial convention of the International Netsuke Society in May. It has been both thrilling and exhausting.
